What does a ‘smart’ charger do?

A smart charger connects to your home network and gives you control and visibility through an app.

Key features:

  • Scheduled charging — use the off-peak window on a compatible tariff
  • Cost and energy tracking — monitor charging use and spend
  • Solar integration — supported chargers can divert surplus solar generation to the car
  • Load management — adjust charging power when the home's other electrical demand is high
  • Remote control — start, stop or adjust charging through the app

Why it matters financially:

On Energy Saving Trust's current broad comparison, 220 miles costs about £17 on normal home electricity, or about £8 on an appropriate EV tariff. Your actual saving depends on the vehicle, mileage, tariff and how consistently you charge within the cheaper window.
