What solar actually generates here
A well-sited 4 kWp array in the Forth Valley or Central Belt typically produces 3,200–3,800 kWh a year — close to an average home's annual electricity use. Panels run on daylight, not heat, and Scotland's cool air actually helps: efficiency drops as panels get hot. Long midsummer days (over 17 hours of daylight in Stirling) do a lot of the year's work.
What it costs in Scotland (2026)
Most of our 4–5 kW installations land between £5,000 and £8,500 fully fitted; adding a battery typically adds £3,000–£5,000. VAT on solar and battery installations is 0% until 31 March 2027, and that saving is already in our prices — it's not a discount anyone should be advertising as a “grant”.
Grants: the honest position
Home Energy Scotland withdrew its standalone solar PV and battery grant-and-loan funding in June 2024, and that hasn't changed in 2026. HES funding now centres on heat pumps (up to £7,500 grant, plus £1,500 rural uplift) and insulation. What's real for solar: 0% VAT, Smart Export Guarantee income, and ECO4 in limited cases where a home is electrically heated. If a salesperson promises you a “solar grant”, ask them to name the scheme.
Connecting to the grid (SP Energy Networks)
Central and southern Scotland's local grid is run by SP Energy Networks. Systems up to 3.68 kW per phase connect under G98 — we simply notify SPEN after commissioning. Larger arrays and most battery hybrids need G99 approval before installation, which can take several weeks, so we submit the application early in the process. Either way, the paperwork is ours to handle, not yours.
