No, you do not need solar panels to install a home EV charger. It works with a normal domestic electricity supply.
Without solar:
- Typical home charging — Energy Saving Trust's current comparison puts about 220 miles of home charging at £17, versus £45 for the equivalent petrol mileage
- Off-peak charging — an appropriate EV tariff can reduce that example to about £8, but tariff windows, vehicle efficiency and charging losses vary
- Smart scheduling — the charger app can schedule charging for cheaper periods automatically
With solar (optional):
Some chargers can direct genuine surplus solar generation to the car. That electricity is not automatically “free” because exporting it may have a value, but using surplus generation can reduce the amount bought from the grid.
Many customers start with an EV charger and add solar later. We can design the installation with that future option in mind.
