It depends on your current electrical setup. Some homes are fine as they are, while others need an upgrade for safety and compliance.
When an upgrade is likely needed:
- Old fuse box with rewireable fuses — these do not meet current safety standards and should be upgraded to a modern consumer unit with RCD protection
- Insufficient main fuse — a 60A main fuse may not support a 7 kW charger alongside your existing household load. We may need to request an upgrade from your electricity supplier (usually free or low cost)
- No spare capacity — if your consumer unit has no spare ways for a dedicated EV circuit
When your existing setup is fine:
- Modern consumer unit with RCD protection already in place
- 80A or 100A main fuse with adequate headroom
- Spare way available in the consumer unit
What we do:
During our free survey, we carry out a full assessment of your main fuse rating, consumer unit condition, and existing electrical load. We will be completely upfront about any upgrade requirements and include them in your fixed-price quote. There are no hidden costs.
Load management technology in modern smart chargers can also help by automatically reducing the charger’s power draw when your home’s other electrical demand is high.
