If you have a battery system designed with backup capability, it can keep selected circuits running during a power cut.
How it works:
- Automatic switchover — suitable backup systems detect the outage and switch over quickly
- Essential circuits — the battery powers your designated essential circuits, which typically include lights, Wi-Fi router, fridge/freezer, phone chargers, and other critical devices
- Duration — how long the backup lasts depends on your battery capacity and how much power you are drawing
Important considerations:
- Not all batteries include backup — backup power, also called EPS or Emergency Power Supply, must be designed into the system
- Solar may extend the backup — if your system supports solar operation during an outage, daytime generation can help recharge the battery
- Whole-house vs essential circuits — most domestic systems back up selected essential circuits rather than the entire home. We discuss which circuits matter most to you during the design stage.
