Yes. You do not need solar panels to have a home battery.
How a standalone battery works:
- Off-peak charging — the battery charges when electricity is cheaper, usually overnight on a time-of-use tariff
- Peak use — your home uses the stored energy when rates are higher
- Losses — some energy is lost charging and discharging, so the saving is a little less than the difference between the two rates
Other things to know:
- Backup power — some battery systems can keep selected circuits running during a power cut, but only if backup is designed in
- Adding solar later — if you add solar panels later, a suitable battery can store your solar generation too; check compatibility before you buy
- VAT — installed standalone batteries currently carry 0% VAT
