Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Scotland?

In most cases, no. Solar panel installations on domestic properties in Scotland are generally classified as permitted development, which means no planning application is required.

When planning permission is NOT needed:

  • Panels are mounted on the roof of your house (not projecting more than 200mm from the roof surface)
  • Panels do not face onto a road on a listed building or in a conservation area
  • The property is not a listed building
  • The installation does not exceed certain size limits relative to your roof

When you MAY need planning permission:

  • Your property is a listed building
  • You live in a conservation area and panels would face a road
  • You want a ground-mounted array that exceeds permitted development size limits
  • The installation is on a flat roof and would be visible from a road

We assess all of this during our initial survey and will advise you clearly if any planning application is required. In the rare cases where it is needed, we can guide you through the process.
