Heat Pump FAQs
Common questions about air source heat pumps in Scotland — from costs and funding to noise, radiators, and cold-weather performance.
Do air source heat pumps work in Scotland's cold winters?
Yes, absolutely. Modern air source heat pumps are designed to operate efficiently down to −15°C or even lower. Scotland’s average winter temperatures are well within this range. Countries like Norway and Finland, which have far harsher winters, rely heavily on heat pump technology. We select units that are specifically rated for excellent performance in colder climates.
How much does a heat pump installation cost?
A typical domestic air source heat pump installation ranges from around £10,000 to £18,000 depending on the size of your home, insulation levels, and whether radiator upgrades are needed. Eligible Scottish homeowners may be able to access up to £7,500 grant funding through Home Energy Scotland, plus an optional interest-free loan of up to £7,500. Eligible rural and island homes can receive up to £9,000 in grant support. Successful loan applications carry a 1.5% administrative fee capped at £150. We provide a clear fixed-price quote after our home survey so there are no surprises.
What heat pump funding is available in Scotland?
Scottish homeowners do not use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The main route is the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan Scheme, which can offer up to £7,500 in grant funding for a heat pump plus an optional interest-free loan of up to £7,500, with up to £9,000 in grant support in eligible rural and island areas. Funding is for whole-house systems that provide heating and hot water, hybrid heat pumps are not eligible, and replacement heat pumps are not eligible for grant funding. Funding is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and is subject to availability. The homeowner must submit the application personally after receiving the application form from Home Energy Scotland.
Will I need to upgrade my radiators?
Possibly, but not always. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than gas boilers, so some radiators may need to be larger to deliver the same warmth. During our home survey, we assess every room and will advise if any upgrades are needed. In many homes, the existing radiators are already oversized enough to work well.
How noisy is a heat pump?
Modern air source heat pumps are very quiet—typically around 40–45 decibels at one metre, which is comparable to a quiet library or a modern fridge. We ensure the unit is positioned and installed to minimise any noise impact, in full compliance with permitted development noise limits.
Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Scotland?
In most cases, no. Air source heat pumps are generally considered permitted development in Scotland, provided they meet certain criteria around size, positioning, and noise. Your property must not be a listed building, and the unit must meet distance requirements from boundaries. We assess all of this during our survey and handle any necessary notifications.
Can a heat pump replace my gas boiler completely?
Yes. A properly designed and installed air source heat pump provides all the space heating and hot water your home needs. It fully replaces a gas boiler. In well-insulated homes, many customers find their heat pump is more comfortable than their old boiler, providing consistent, even warmth throughout the house.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
A typical installation takes 2–3 days. This includes fitting the outdoor unit, connecting it to your heating system, upgrading any radiators if needed, and commissioning the system. We work efficiently and keep disruption to an absolute minimum.
Can I pair a heat pump with my existing solar panels?
Absolutely, and we’d highly recommend it. Solar panels can generate the electricity your heat pump needs, essentially giving you free heating. Adding a battery storage system makes this even more effective by storing solar energy for use in the evening and overnight when heating demand is highest.
