Usually not. In most cases, we can reuse the existing wiring that served your old storage heaters.
What typically happens:
- Circuit switching — old storage heaters usually run on a separate off-peak circuit (Economy 7 or Economy 10). We switch this wiring over to the standard 24-hour circuit at your consumer unit, so your new radiators can operate whenever you want them to.
- Existing cable runs — the cables already run to where the old heaters were positioned, which is usually where you want the new radiators too
- Consumer unit work — some modifications to your fuse board may be needed to accommodate the circuit changes
When a rewire or additional work IS needed:
- If you want radiators in different positions from the old storage heaters
- If the existing wiring is very old and does not meet current safety standards
- If the cable sizes are not adequate for the new radiators
- If you want to add radiators in rooms that did not previously have storage heaters
We assess all of this during our survey. In the majority of storage heater replacement jobs, we can use the existing wiring with minimal modifications, keeping the cost and disruption low.
